In the UAE

Who you are speaking to.

Spoken by the Chinese community in the UAE and by the business delegations, investors and tourists from mainland China who visit. Mandarin is also used by guests from Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

Common pairs at events

  • English ↔ Mandarin
  • Arabic ↔ Mandarin
  • Mandarin → English and Arabic

Dialects and varieties

Mandarin (Putonghua)
The standard spoken language of mainland China, written in Simplified characters. Most visitors from mainland China speak it, whatever their regional language at home.
Taiwan Mandarin
The same spoken language, with differences in accent and vocabulary, written in Traditional characters.
Simplified and Traditional characters
Choose by audience: Simplified for mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia; Traditional for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Both can run as separate caption channels.
Cantonese
A separate spoken Chinese language, used in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong, and not mutually intelligible with Mandarin when spoken. Cantonese is not one of our standard live channels; talk to us about a Sim Trans interpreter.

Typical events

  • Trade and investment forums with Chinese delegations
  • Exhibitions and trade shows with Chinese exhibitors and buyers
  • Real estate and investor presentations
  • Tourism and hospitality training and briefings
  • University partnerships and academic conferences
  • Government-to-government meetings and signing ceremonies

Glossary advice

  • Chinese counts in units of ten thousand (万) and a hundred million (亿). One million is 一百万 and one billion is 十亿, so large figures are a classic error point. Put key figures in the glossary and on slides.
  • Chinese names put the family name first. Business guests are often addressed by surname and title, such as 王总 (President Wang) or 李经理 (Manager Li).
  • Use the official Chinese names of companies, free zones and government entities where they exist, rather than leaving them to be translated.
  • Arabic names of dignitaries have established Chinese renderings. Agree them in advance so they are consistent across speeches and captions.
  • Confirm whether your Chinese guests read Simplified or Traditional characters before the event.
How to prepare a glossary

Mandarin at UAE events

Chinese business delegations, investors and tourists are a regular part of the UAE’s event calendar. At trade forums, exhibitions and investor briefings, a Mandarin channel lets Chinese guests follow the whole programme in their own language, and lets Chinese speakers on stage be heard in Arabic and English.

SIM.AI delivers Mandarin as spoken interpretation, with captions in Simplified or Traditional characters, on each guest’s own phone, a few seconds behind the speaker. Mandarin can run as one of up to 12 languages at the same time from one audio feed.

A typical set-up

An investment forum in Dubai hosts a delegation from mainland China alongside UAE officials and international investors. The opening is in Arabic, presentations are in English, and the head of the Chinese delegation speaks in Mandarin. Guests scan a QR code on their badge. Chinese delegates choose 中文 and hear the Arabic and English sessions in Mandarin; other guests hear the Chinese speaker in Arabic or English. Before the day, we load company names in their official Chinese forms, dignitaries’ names, and the key figures in the presentations into the glossary. Our team monitors every channel throughout. See how this works for exhibitions and trade shows.

Mandarin, Cantonese and the two scripts

Mandarin is the standard spoken language of mainland China and Taiwan. Cantonese, spoken in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong, is a different spoken language, and it is not one of our standard live channels. Written Chinese comes in two forms: Simplified characters for mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia, and Traditional characters for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Ask your guests which they read; both can run at the same event.

Large numbers

Chinese counts large numbers in units of ten thousand (万) and a hundred million (亿), not thousands and millions. Investment figures are where errors are most likely, for people and machines alike. Put key figures in the glossary and on slides, and consider Precision mode for sessions full of figures and technical terms.

Honest limits

Machine interpretation can make mistakes with names, figures, idiom, humour and four-character expressions quoted for effect. For negotiations, signings and high-level protocol, choose a certified human interpreter from Sim Trans, or a hybrid AI and human set-up. Browse all 81 languages to plan the rest of your audience.

Questions organisers ask

Do you offer Simplified and Traditional Chinese?

Yes. Captions can be shown in Simplified or Traditional characters, and both can run as separate channels at the same event. Choose Simplified for guests from mainland China and Traditional for guests from Taiwan or Hong Kong.

Do you offer Cantonese?

Cantonese is not one of our standard live channels. Cantonese speakers who read Chinese can follow the Traditional Chinese captions, and Sim Trans can provide human interpreters where spoken Cantonese is needed.

Can you interpret directly between Arabic and Mandarin?

Yes. Arabic speakers can be heard in Mandarin and Mandarin speakers in Arabic, with captions in each language. This suits government and trade events with Chinese delegations.

When should we book a human Mandarin interpreter?

For negotiations, contract signings, legally binding sessions and high-level protocol. Sim Trans provides certified human interpreters, alone or in a hybrid set-up with SIM.AI.
