Amharic at UAE events
The Ethiopian community in the UAE works across hotels, airlines, hospitals, homes and businesses. Many speak some English or Arabic, but Amharic is the language in which they take in detail best. It is also the federal working language of Ethiopia, so it often reaches guests whose first language is Afaan Oromo or another Ethiopian language.
SIM.AI delivers Amharic as spoken interpretation and as captions in Ethiopic script, on each guest’s own phone, a few seconds behind the speaker. Amharic can run as one of up to 12 languages at the same time from one audio feed.
A typical set-up
A hospitality group in Dubai runs a welcome and orientation day for new staff from several countries. The HR director speaks English. Staff scan a QR code on a screen and choose Amharic, Filipino, Nepali, Hindi or English. Before the day, we load the group’s hotel and outlet names, policies, benefits and key dates into the glossary, with dates checked against the Ethiopian calendar where it matters. Our team monitors every channel from the side of the room, and HR receives transcripts per language for its records. For sessions like this, see hospitality and tourism.
Script, names and time
Amharic is written in Ethiopic script, also called fidel, in which each character stands for a consonant and a vowel. Captions appear in that script on the guest’s phone.
Three details often catch organisers out:
- Names. Ethiopians have no family surname. The second name is the father’s given name, so people are addressed by their own first name with a title: Ato Abebe, Weyzero Almaz.
- Calendar. Ethiopia uses its own calendar, several years behind the Gregorian one.
- Time. Many people count the hours from 6 a.m., so a time said in Amharic can differ from the clock by six hours.
Put names, dates and times in the glossary. Our guide to preparing a glossary shows how.
Tigrinya and Afaan Oromo
These are separate languages, not dialects of Amharic, and neither is one of our standard live channels. If your audience includes Eritrean guests or Oromo speakers with little Amharic, talk to us about a human interpreter from Sim Trans.
Honest limits
Machine interpretation can make mistakes with names, strong accents, noisy rooms and overlapping speakers. For legal, disciplinary or medical conversations, choose a certified human interpreter from Sim Trans, or a hybrid AI and human set-up. See all 81 languages for the rest of your audience.
